What are some good sites to download some GOOD games for Linux?  I really like download.com, but they seem to cover only Windows and Mac :(

Download.com is indeed \'just\' for Mac/Win. Where I would start my search for decent games for Linux is
http://www.linuxgames.com/
another great resource is
http://www.tucows.com which boasts 4290 PROGRAMS for Linux. One great game (not free) is Marble Blast. Quadra is another really good game for the Linux platform.

Remember that major game designers are not (as of now) developing games for open source and so you are going to have to settle for games that are developed by college students etc...

Linux and Package Managers for Downloading Games
« Reply #2 on: January 07, 2007, 08:12:06 PM »
(I am thinking about eventually making this into an article.  If you have any comments please PM me directly)

The beauty of Linux (besides being free) is it\'s versatility.  The problem with designing games for Linux is that there are more distributions of GNU/Linux than you can shake a stick at.  Why does this matter?  Well, different games are written with different languages and call upon different resources of the computer.  This requires coordination with other dependant programs that may or may not already be installed.  Even if it is, the path to that specific program may be different in different versiona of Linux.

This presents an enormous challenge compared to the counterpart Windows which comes in only a small handfull of distributions (Home, Pro, Corp, etc..) which are, for the most part, the same.

So with Linux, you can connect to a website that boasts many downloads for Linux, but odds are great that many of them simply will not install properly on your system.

So what\'s the solution?

This is where "Package repositories" come in real handy.  A package repository is a server that houses programs that are compatible with your specific distribition.  The more advanced Linux distros have Update Managers that connect to one or more repositories to help A) keep your computer software up-to-date (acting similar to Windows Update) and B) offer additional software downloads for you to install.

The great thing is that the Update Manager knows what software versions of you currently have and knows what exactly needs to be added or updated for you to install a new program from the repository.  All the pre-required files are packaged up for you and installed automatically.  Sweet!  Some examples of Update Managers are .RPM (Redhat, Fedora, SuSE, Mandriva), DPKG (Debian, Mepis, Ubuntu), and APT (various distros).

Using the Update Manager on your Linux Distro, you can access many games and programs for free!  Give it a try and let us know which is your favorite!

The solution is what JAVA and FLASH were designed for. Back in the 1990s JAVA was touted as being the programming language that would be in your coffee-maker to full-fledged games.

Of course that never occured but rest assured JAVA is not dead.

FLASH is another language where you can find some great games. What irks me is there is no 64-bit version of Flash out (STILL) even though there have been 64-bit chips/boards for two years now.

A year later (year and a half) and still nothing from Flash for 64-bit browsers... there are computers that are coming standard with 64-bit now because of the 3Gig limitation of Windoze and still nothing.

Adobe is working on Flash Player support for 64-bit platforms as part of our ongoing commitment to the cross-platform compatibility of Flash Player. We have not yet announced timing or release dates. 2/5/2008

This is really getting frustrating!

I have not the slightest idea but you are running a 64-bit system and your browser is running at 32-bit (because of plugin compatibility)... it\'s REALLY frustrating and over a year... that is just too long.
