No Xserver with MSI FX5200 Graphics Card
« on: September 04, 2006, 02:32:59 PM »
I\'m running Ubuntu v6.06.1 with a Sempron 2800cpu 741GX-M motherboard, and  128M RAM. The motherboard has onboard VGA with SiS741GX Northbridge chipset for graphics.  I was recently given an MSI FX5200-128LF graphics accelerator card. When I installed it and tried to reboot, I received an error message that Xserver had failed to load and my system booted to a terminal window.  I was unable to load Xserver from the terminal prompt.

Should I disable the onboard VGA in BIOS setup?  Do I just need to download and install the proper NVidia drivers for the new board?   Any help would be appreciated.

When you try to load Xserver from the term window, do you receive any specific error message?
You might want to check here for the dr1vers and view the readme for configuring the Xserver config file.

Thanks for the links.  And I don\'t recall any specific error messages but I\'d have to shut down this computer, reinstall the card, and reboot to check.  That would be rather inconvenient at the moment so I\'ll have to wait until later.

Yeh, when it is convenient for you, try it in a few different ways like that and let us know how it turns out.

The problem is you dont have the proper video driver installed in your Linux GUI, if you are using specialized VGA cards and you switch cards, you will have the problem you stated. You can use the original card, set your VGA driver to a basic VGA and 1024x768 resolution and then install the new card, that should get you going. You can play with the resolution and best of all find the correct VGA driver for your new card.
