Where is it hanging... Linux checks for all hardware everytime it boots up... it could be hanging there (download appropriate drivers if available).

I need more information as to exactly where it is hanging before I can help further.

I found that it is taking more time at these locations

2) Starting

Initially At these 2 steps it is taking very long time.......

3) After entering the username and Password at login it is taking toolong time to enter into the desktop....

My sound drivers, graphic drivers are configured automatically ...then where could be the problem ....

Let me know if u need some more details regarding this ..

Why did you choose RedHat distro?  Are you planning to run it as a server?  Redhat is typically used as a server.  Who knows, it may be setting up and running server daemons or other processes that you may not need but may be slowing the system.  Also, it may have a tough time detecting your mothernoard and just choosing generic drivers and such that may effectively bring your comp to a speed half of what it actually is.

If you are using it as a desktop PC, you may want to use Mandrake, or Xandros distros.  Also, I would try knoppix live cd and if it runs faster than your RedHat install, then you know you have some compatibility issues there with the motherboard.

If he was running as a server it still should not take 10-15 minutes to load... there is a problem with device drivers if you ask me.

I believe the device could be the motherboard itself.  If it configures as a generic MB then it would not be realizing the full potential of all the hardware attached to it (like RAM, CPU, etc).

I run a CentOS 3.5 server (without a gui though) and it takes 2-4 minutes to boot.
I wouldn\'t try Mandrake (Mandravia, or whatever as it is called now), but Knoppix doesn\'t sound bad.
Try upgrading RH9 to Fedora Core 3. It could be just that RH9 is too old for you MB (not likely, but maybe). If that doesn\'t work then look at the drivers.
Good luck,

Can you give the actual model code for your motherboard?  Is it a Gateway PC?

Well, the challenge is to find out where the performance bottleneck is, then address that problem location from there.  Are you sure all your hardware is in good working order?  (i.e. no bad RAM or CPU, etc..)

Also, RedHat is pretty robust.  There may be many processes running which you do not want or need.  Log in to your SSH terminal and run this command:

Code: [Select]
top -c

This will give you a readout of the top processes running at the time and how much server resources they are hogging up.  To quit the readout, press "q".  Please reply with the top 5 and what they are reporting.
