My best bet is what I was thinking from the beginning; that Knoppix does a really great job at detecting the various drivers needed for all your hardware.  I would highly recommend for you Mandrake or Suse linux instead of RedHat 9, since RedHat is designed more for a server (non GUI) and one like Mandrake is more for GUI Desktop use.

The Mandrake (nee Mandriva) distros are good w/non bleeding edge PCs (afa speed goes), Knoppix is a good live distro, and SUSE is rather nice as well. I have no problems w/Fedora\'s performance, but I am running it on an Athlon-64 w/512M RAM. There is also Ubuntu (a Debian derivative), but I have not installed that on anything yet - I\'ve only heard the good press it has gotten.

Another thing you can try is sampling the \'live\' CDs from SUSE and Mandriva. These will do the same thing as the Knoppix OS on CD. So you can see which one performs the best, and which layout you like better.

I have tried the Ubuntu live cd and have found it to be great. Debian is excellent!

I second this statement.

Second Statement
« Reply #21 on: August 17, 2005, 08:16:43 PM »
Although I agree with you that the second statement (Live Cd\'s) IS a good idea, it is a good idea ONLY if you are... curious about Linux and want to see "what it\'s all about".

Other than that you will need to install (correctly) a version that will allow you to do what you want to do (server, applications, etc...)

hey are you using any parts that are made just for windoze

like a winmodem

perhaps your chipset on you motherboard (big one)

do some reasearch on your hardware to see if it was manufactured to run windows

linux chokes on these parts

RH can be used as both a server and workstation (all GNU/Linux distros can), but there are a lot of services turned on by default in a RH or Fedora install that may be slowing your system down. Also, RH/Fedora is not the leanest distro around, and a PIII with your amount of RAM may have trouble with it. Try looking through the list of services started at boot - (any RH users know the name of the GUI tool?), turn off ones you don\'t need, and see if things are faster. If not, you may need to run a leaner distro. RH 9.0 is not bad though, if you turn off the 40 gazillion services enabled by default.
