How can I configure Sendmail PPP and ICS
« on: January 16, 2006, 07:25:07 AM »
Hie good folks

My company currently uses a 56k modem to connect to our ISP. We are currently using:mad: Windows to connect to our ISP, collect email (using MDaemon) for local users and share the internet connection.

I would like to move over to a linux server which can do the above. What I would like to know are the following:
1. Dial up to our ISP
2. Collect emails for our domain (which is aliased by ISP), which calls for mail server setup I am sure.
3. Share the internet connection.
4. should have basic security.

Please if you can help me I would really be grateful because I am tired of Windows. I would like to know the scripts to configure, the programs to install, etc. I have a copy of RedHat 8.

Thanks in advance.

Do a testing system first.

Since this is for your business, you probably rely on your email and such.  A Windows system that gets stuff done for you is better than a Linux system that is not working for what you need.  You need to first get a couple spare computers and set up a test system.  I would go with CentOS over RH8 since RH8 is out-of-date.  Take a box, install Linux on it.  Then give your best shot at installing and configuring all the services you need.  As you need help, come to Linux Boards with your more specific questions and such.

Good luck to you.

Sendmail PPP and ICS

Hie

Maybe I wasnt clear on what I want. Although we are getting results from our Windows machine, it is giving us a lot of problems so we decided it was better to move to Linux, and since RH8 is what we have, I thought I might find someone who who knows how to do it.

We use a "smart-host" at our ISP - this is where our MDaemon connects to using a login name and a password which are different from our dialup username and password. So we want to be able to use Linux (after successfully testing!), but I am not sure how I should configure Sendmail to use a smart host, and how to share the internet connection.

Thanks

Configuring sendmail for smart-host and sharing internet
« Reply #3 on: January 18, 2006, 11:47:51 AM »
For configuring sendmail to use as smarthost, try on of the guides online.  Here are a couple you may find useful:
http://www.faqs.org/docs/linux_network/x15291.html

http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/offline_mailing.html
As for your connection sharing, you may want to go the direction of NAT routing which Linux does very well.  Look into
SmoothWall or Freesco
