How do I connect to the internet?
« on: November 11, 2005, 06:47:35 AM »
I\'m a long time Windows user who has just converted to Linux Suse 10.0 and, to be perfectly honest, I\'m lost!

I need to know how to connect to the internet. I have tried various HOWTO\'s but my eyes glaze over as I read them!!!

From what I understand you connect your modem via an ethernet card.

I have a DSL modem and an ethernet card, and I have tried to connect the two and get connected, but it is way over my head!

Can anyone give me some help? Preferably with as little jargon as possible!

Thanks!

Simple answer... don\'t use SuSE. For the novice use Ubantu (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/download/). It will take care off all the nasty stuff like configuring your modem/sound/video. Although NOT as powerful as Mandrake (now Mandriva), SusE (which is a cool version), or RedHat (the mac-daddy, all-powerful) of Linux versions, it will do very well for what you are looking to do.

If you are looking to setup a SERVER then you need to look at RedHat and not SuSe.

Welcome to the forums.  All you really need to do is physically install your ethernet adapter into your PC (of course you will have the computer off and unplugged while doing this).  Once you are done with that, plug back in and boot up linux.  The OS MAY detect the driver for the adapter or it may not.  If not, you will need to get it from another location (have a friend put it on a CD or something like that for you).

That is IF there is an adapter that is made for Linux. The one thing I have noticed and will make life a LOT easier for you if this is the case with you is that Linux HATES LOB (Lan-on-Board). Just go out and spend the $10 and get a PCI LAN card. Even better (and cheaper) is to get one online.

Ok, I\'ve tried changing to Ubuntu, and still have had no success in getting the setup to be automatic.

The ethernet card is being detected however my router modem does not seem to be doing whatever it is it should do!!! I can clarify that I have a Sitecom DC-214 ADSL Annex A Router/Modem. I have tried using it both via the ethernet card and via USB but neither option is working... :(

I think I just need to know how to set the router/modem up in Linux. I think all the equipment should be ok.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Have you been able to find the Linux driver for either your modem\'s USB or your ethernet card?  What is teh make/model of your card?

The ethernet card seems to be ok and recognised. It is a Realtek card, but not sure what make cos I\'m at a different computer. Where would I get the drivers for Linux for the router/modem and ethernet card? BTW uber-n00b question: Is an ethernet card the same thing as a network interface card? I know so little about computer hardware! LoL!
Thanks for the help.

If that is the case, then just connect the ethernet (forget teh USB) and connect to your router/modem as normal (typically through a web browser at http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 ).
If you can communucate with the modem, then you know the driver is good to go and you just need to test connecting to the internet from there.

Yes, an ethernet card is a type of network interface card, so in this case they would equal.  A modem is another type of NIC.  :)

Score one for the n00b-team! I got the settings all configured and am now typing from my home computer!

Thanks for all the help guys!

Now, just one more slight question... Does Ubuntu have a built in fire-wall? If no, where can I get one from? Also do I need anti-virus software?

Thanks!

Not that I am aware of... There are a bunch of both Linux and Ubuntu firewalls online (Google "ubuntu firewall")... Of course.

Congratulations! Now the firewall & A/V is a personal choice (like ABS or Airbags in a car). It just depends on how safe you want to be.
