How do I get on the internet using a globetrotter
« on: March 12, 2005, 11:59:17 AM »
Hi I have just bought a LaCie Globetrotter. Apprently I must have configuered it wrongly, my picture when I am trying to turn it on is something like a dos: window. Lover right side of screen black, rest blue. I have tried to run the rescue command with no help.
Does any one of you whizzards know how to help me? Bear in mind I have no knowlegde of Linux programming or other for that sake.
Regards S

Sounds like post install. Maybe it is locking up while in post install. I believe what you are seeing is Anaconda. Does it just hang there? Maybe try letting it ride a few minutes and see what happens.
Does Mandrake come installed by default?

This  is what you bought, correct?  Are you getting to a prompt at all?  Are you getting any boot messages along the way?  Have you tried contacting support?

Thanks for your replies, I have tried to do what you have written to me but still no change, even the responses from globetrotter doesn´t help.
This is my latest info from my attempted start up:

[staale@localhost staale]$
I have tried to start it with command startx
And I get the following message:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock and start again.

Any one, ring a bell???

I would try to run xf86config and redo the config for your xserver.

Hello Staale,

When you say you are able to connect to computer with LAN does that mean you can also connect to your router from your GlobeTrotter? Or are you using a hub? If your using a hub does your ISP allow multiple pulls from ip#s? You may have to get a router so it can also serv as DHCP to give you multiple local ip#\'s. Try hooking only the Globetrotter up after shutting everything down and put the RJ-45 from the Globetrotter straight into the modem and turn everything on.
If none of this works then we will try your ifconfig.

Hi David,
I am sorry to answer you that I have not been able to solve this.
It seems for me that it is not possible to get this equipment to work on the side of a LAN system. At least the folks from the mandrake org. could not help me.
I believed to have bought a system that I could use hooking up to a existing network and work on my own from here. When I start my globetrotter  and write somting to it I have to store it on a floppy for later to print it on a direct connected computer in the LAN. It has so far been a disappointment.
regards Staale,
PS! Have you heard the same from others???

I have never messed with a globetrotter but it should be almost the same as any other linux system I think.

Good luck with it :)
