I have received a video e-mail that links to a web-page that plays streaming video using windows media player.  It won\'t play in my default mozilla Foxfire browser as I\'m running linux on this box.  It will play on my windows XP machine in mozilla as long as I\'ve added the foxfire data to the shiminclusion in the regedit entry for wmp. Of course, that\'s the problem, there\'s no wmp on linux.  Is there something comparable or a way to get it to work?  I am a spankin\' new linux newbie. So don\'t know where to begin.

Thanks in advance for your patience and for any assistance you can provide.

Welcome to the forums jchannah!  In order to get to the root of this, you need to tell us what the extension of the filename is.  For example, is it filename.wmv or filename.asf, etc...?

Regarding File Type
« Reply #2 on: April 09, 2006, 03:19:44 PM »
There\'s the rub as they say.  I don\'t quite know.  It\'s a VMDirect Video E-mail from my brother.  It works great on windows, as it\'s windows based.  I\'m trying to figure out how to get it to work on my Linux box, I\'m running Xandros 3.0.2.

I\'m going to cut & paste the link below.  It pulls up a page that includes the wmp player.  I looked at the page coding, but only find a link to the player that apparently encodes the files address.  When you click it in Firefox on my linux box, it says the media is no longer available; however, it\'s actually there.  I asked my brother to leave the link available for a while as I work on it.

Here \'tis:

Again, I really appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide, even just to point me in the right direction.

.wmv Players For Linux Firefox
« Reply #3 on: April 11, 2006, 04:12:16 PM »
Gotcha...  The page you showed uses an iframe to show an embedded .wmv file which is native to Windows MediaPlayer (not available for Linux) but can be played with other players such as Xine (GPL) or Mplayer (GPL).
Both of these are free downloads, so give them a try and let us know how it goes ;)  If it works it would be cool to post a screenshot!

I\'ll give one or both a try and let you know how it goes.  Hopefully, it won\'t take as long for me to try this out.  I just bout a KVM at wal-mart for $21 and makes it easy to switch between my two systems.  gotta love it!
