LiveCD/DVD questions
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:00:05 PM »
I have a few live CDs and DVDs. Suse, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, and Knoppix.

Is there anyway to edit files on a hard drive with NTFS?

I am currently trying to delete some files that could be preventing my computer from booting up in windows, but cannot edit/delete any files on the hard drive with live cds. I have tried booting up with windows cd, but that doesn\'t work.

 Thanks

Installing a program like Ext2 will allow you to access your Windows files.

I have not used it on a LiveCD before so let me know what results you get.

I don\'t get it. If I can\'t edit anything in the HD with livecd how will I be able to install an app?

I do not think people are going to know what exactly you mean by this.  Can you be more specific?

I know that this isn\'t a Windows forum, but you should definitely be able to boot the "recovery console" from your Windows CD.

There are some bootable CD-roms out there (may or may not be based on Linux) that are made for file management and recovery of NTFS filesystem.  Knoppix and the like are not designed for that purpose.

This is a Windows question and not a Linux question.

1. Restart your computer with your Windows CD
2.If you are prompted to press a key to start the computer from CDROM (if not it will try to boot from the hard drive).
3. Press the R key to start the Recovery Console.
4. Enter your Administrator password. If you don\'t know it, it  can very well be nothing (just hit enter) if you didn\'t set one up.
5. Type: fixmbr

Your damaged MBR (master boot record) will be rewritten with a new one. In some cases the boot SECTOR has also been damaged and you will need to go through the same process but this time
Type: fixboot.

Attention: This is for a system that has only ONE operating system installed. If you have more than one operating system installed the procedure will be much more complicated.

Running off a livecd you cannot add, remove, or edit any files to a hard drive with xp or any other NTFS file system. I was asking if is there anyway you can do that.

As far as the problem, that\'s a totally different issue. I was just asking in general by using an example. Is there any way to edit files while in livecd on the hard drive.

Not in NTFS you cannot unless you use a seperate program as mentioned above, and then I don\'t even know if you can do that... you should be able to see and add/delete/modify in a Linux partition just fine.
