Root permissions

I am new to linux and Enhanced machine control.  Put I am trying to change the values in an INI file.  I try to save the file and it will not allow me to do so.  I have looked this over and I think that it will not allow me to save it in the folder because I do not own the folder "root" does.  My question is how do I find out what the password for root is.  I installed this version of Ubuntu and emc2.  I just need to be able to save this file in the folder it came from.

Reset Root Password in Linux

Boot the system up from FD or CD.
Mount the /root partition.
Edit the /etc/shadow file
Remove the password.
Reboot and reset the password.
