Root Shell problem in Konsole
« on: January 07, 2006, 04:35:05 PM »
Whenever I try and start a root shell in Konsole it wont let me enter a password. In fact the only key that works is the enter key and all it does is shut the root shell window. How do I go about running Konsole as root. I\'m using Ubuntu 5.10.

Thanks.....

Root Shell problem in Konsole

So you are already in the desktop and are openning the Konsole from the Desktop?  Are you in the desktop as root user already?  If not, when you enter the Konsole will it let you enter "root" as the user, THEN it will not allow you to enter the password?  Can you please clarify on these things?

Can\'t run as root.
« Reply #3 on: January 09, 2006, 06:57:43 PM »
As you can tell I\'m new to this. I can\'t figure out how to run as root. Other than konsole everything that needs a root password just asks for it. When I enter konsole it fires up but when I try and start a root sesion the keyboard won\'t except any keystrokes other than the enter key. I only have one user on this system and when I installed it it did not ask me to create a root password it only asked for a user account password. Any other command that requires a root password accepts the user account password.

I\'ll keep at it. I would realy like to figure this linux stuff out. Even if it kills me.

Thanks for the help

su to root from konsole
« Reply #4 on: January 09, 2006, 09:48:08 PM »
Hmm.. we will get you squared away with this, it may just take some grunting.  I know that if you are not running as root user (thats actually a good thing) then you want to operate as root user (such as in a terminal emulator like Konsole) then you need to "su to root".  When you enter Konsole, type "su" (without the quotes) and press enter, then try to enter your root password.

Let me know if this helps.
