Unable to Hear Sound - Help Configure Sound Card
« Reply #1 on: October 25, 2005, 12:27:43 PM »
Usually this goes for modems and ethernet cards but could very well go for on-board sound as well... Linux HATES it.

I had to buy a NIC card even though I have onboard LAN just so Linux would recognize it.

I also have the K8V board using Mandriva and although it SAYS the sound card is not configured it works fine.

Again as I have said in another post, there is no reason to use RedHat unless you are using it for a server. Use SuSE or Mandrake (Mandriva) instead, they are MUCH more user-friendly.

Fedore Core isn\'t bad for a desktop OS, but try a newer version (FC 3 or 4 might have better driver support).
If you are really looking for a good OS however, try Ubuntu :) I tried it and it worked great, Debian really is amazing.

Ubuntu is pretty awesome. I just downloaded it and although it does have a couple hickups it found all of my hardware just fine.

I am on the 64_bit version and there are problems with that. There is no flash player available, nor is there much of anything along the line of plugins, which I guess is to be expected.

When installing the only problem I had is that it refused to overwrite Redhat. I had to create yet another partition and have Windows Home, Pro, Redhat, and Ubuntu all now on this machine which makes for a pretty messy boot loader.

I will delete Redhat\'s partition manually and everything should be fine on that front.

I am assuming your card is recognized by your system, since you mentioned it is recognized by your "hardware browser", what ever that is. What desktop are you running, and what sound sub-system: alsa or arts? What is the output of
Code: [Select]
lspci ? That will tell you your card is recognized by the system. If the card is recognized, it may be as simple as the volume being muted. Yes, it sounds silly, but it could be.

Sometimes the simplest of answers is the correct one.

Reminds me of the blonde joke about the woman who called tech support \'cause her computer wasn\'t working and after much ado they found that her electric was out \'cause it had just stormed there

Anyways, hope that helps you.

Since youare using ALSA, what mixer are you opening? To unmute everything in ALSA, you would open a command window and type
Code: [Select]
alsamixer you then use the right and eft arrow keys to navigate the mixer from one channel to the next. The "m" key unmutes/mutes channels, and the up and down arrows increase/decrease the volume. There are lots of channels, so don\'t think you are limited to what\'s on the screen. If the master is muted - that\'s your problem.

After you adjust all of the your volume settings, you will need to su to root and run
Code: [Select]
alsactl store to permanently store your mixer settings. Depending on your distro. you may need to run
Code: [Select]
alsactl restore either in a local init script, or start a service at boot, but many distros run a script at init that restores these for you, so after doing "alsactl store", you don\'t have to do anything. Check your distro\'s docs.

Let me know if it works!
