Update Suse 9.0 Upgrade?
« on: September 14, 2006, 10:06:30 AM »
Hi,
is there a way to update Suse Suse 9.0? I tried to do it with susewatcher but it didn\'t seem to work very well... My main problem is actually kopete. The version I have simply doesn\'t work (Kopete 0.7.3 (Using KDE 3.1.4).
Could you please help me? And I actually don\'t have a gcc which makes the installing of new programs difficult...

Hi,

I hope I can help you but I am not clear on a few things.  What version were you thinking about upgrading to?
Firstly, if you are even thinking about upgrading, you need to start with a complete system backup; otherwise, forget about it -- that is, if you value your system.  If it is just a testing system, then that is up to you.

Can you please provide more detail?  Were there any specific errors?  If so what were they?
If all you are having trouble with is one program (kopete) then personally, I would not believe that a system upgrade would be necessary.  I would assume that it is a dependency issue which could be outlined in the error log somewhere.

Thanks for the answer. Kopete is not working with MSN (password is wrong although I\'m sure it is right). I tried to install a newer version of Kopete but when I want to install a new program I need a compiler, which i don\'t have... (tried to install gcc but I need again to specify a functioning compiler)...
Basicaly my problem is, how do I get a compiler on my computer?

The error message tells me to set the cc variable to a working compiler...

Geez, I would think an honorable distro like SuSE would come with a compiler.  Did you do some kind of funky custom install?  I heard a lot of newer distro versions were not coming with gcc or compilers.  That\'s just dumb.

Just to make sure, in console type:
Code: [Select]
gcc --version
or
Code: [Select]
which gcc

If it\'s not there, check your install CD or use Yast or YUM.
