How do I configure my dsl modem?
« on: May 10, 2008, 08:20:02 AM »
I would like to know how to configure my dsl modem to work with Linux freespire? I keep getting an error message saying ip address invalid or gateway ip address invalid. I am almost certain I am using the correct ip information. Can anyone tell me what to do to configure my dsl modem to work with Linux? My email address is jwelch8@verizon.net

Thanks,
John (tennisbum)

Hi Tennisbum,

I can help you with this.  Can you please post here the exact settings you are entering and where exactly you are entering them?  That way I can compare to what I have and respond with what I find.  It os probably something really simple :)

Thanks for the reply. I went to network settings and manually put in my ip address and that did not work. I also put in my gateway ip address and I get an error message saying invalid ip address and invalid ip gateway address. I have also tried to do the automatic setup but nothing works. My dsl modem is a westell 890. My isp dsl provider is verizon. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

It would help if you could say what IP address and gateway you put in there manually.

Very good.  Sorry for so many questions, (last one here) but what is the brand and model of your modem?

My dsl modem is westell 890 and my isp is verizon. I think my modem is an older one and that might be the problem. I am not good at configuring systems. Thanks for the help.

dynaweb, By doing a search on the net I have found out some information to pass on to you and others. My modem is a westell b90-210015-04 made 10/04 for verizon. This modem has been discontinued and is not supported by westell. I have to contact verizon for any tech support. Maybe I need to upgrade my modem to work with Linux. I don\'t know.

Thanks

OK, I think this is a gateway/modem or router/modem as many modern DSL modems are.  This means that it has two separate networks.  WAN and LAN.

WAN (Wide Area Network) uses the IP addresses that are seen by the internet world, like the 71.127.18.237 you mentioned.  This is assigned to your modem by your ISP (Verizon) using DHCP protocol.  Typically gateway modems should default with DHCP enabled and grab the proper IP address automatically.

LAN (Local Area Network) uses "internal use only" IP addresses.  These can be assigned automatically (using LAN DHCP service enabled in the gateway and a DHCP service running on your computer) or assigned manually (using settings in your internet config area on your PC).

I suggest the following:
1) Connect your computer to your modem.  Open a web browser (Firefox, etc..) and go to http://192.168.1.1 (addresses that begin with 192.168 are LAN internal ones.  I believe your router defaults to 192.168.1.1
2) Once connected to the modem, set WAN DHCP to enable, and LAN use the following:
  Gateway 192.168.1.1
  NetMask 255.255.255.0
3) Then go to your network config settings in your Linux and set the following for LAN:
IP Address: 192.168.1.2 (or 192.168.1.3 etc...)
  Gateway 192.168.1.1
  NetMask 255.255.255.0

Additionally, you can download the manual for westell b90-210015-04 your here.  It is in .doc format but you can open/read it with Open Office :)

With all that you should be set to go.  Give a try and let me know if you have any other questions.

dynaweb, Thanks for the information. I still can not get into my modem setup using 192.168.1.1 for some reason. It is like I am locked out of my modem setup. All docs say that my modem default is 192.168.1.1 but it does not work. I don\'t know what else to do. I an going to print out your instructions and save them. I am not going to give up on this. I am pretty gppd with computers but this problems has me stumped. I understand how it is suposed to work but it does not work like it should. I can get connected to the internet now but I can not access the internet. Maybe I need a different modem?? This modem is plug and play using windows xp home edition. Thanks again for trying to help me with your good detailed instructions. I will keep trying. I am running out of hope of running Linux with this modem. I am disabled due to cerebral palsy and computers are about the only thing I enjoy doing. I would love to dump windows forever.

Great!  A step forward!  What did you do to make it work?

"but I can not bring up any sites" ...
That is a DNS resolver issue.  In your network config in Linux, input your DNS servers that your ISP supplied to you, or just try 192.168.1.1
