You are not going to get a blue screen in Linux... that is a product of Windoze...

You definately have a screen problem and I don\'t know the command off hand to change it in the command line so you can boot into your GUI.

Try...

xrandr

this will show you what resolutions your monitor supports

then type

xrandr -s 640x480

(example)...

let me know if that works for you.

xrandr

that alone will tell you what displays your monitor can handle.

I tried that.
debian:~# xrandr
Can\'t open display
I have been trying lots of things.  That was one thing I had hoped would give some information.

I have to tell you, it does not seem thus far that Linux and Debian are living up to the hype.

You must understand that this is the latest, most secure and up-to-date version of linux.  Although Linux will run on older machines, it will take quite a bit of effort in configuration.  Think about it, if Debian were to include drivers to fully support every graphics card from win95 era onward, there would most likely be 100 CDs for the install.  The fact that it is POSSIBLE to run Linux on your Chembook laptop is amazing.  I can guarantee you that there is a zero percent chance of running the latest most stable version of Windows (Vista) on that system.

The challenge you are having here is getting a good default video setting for your Chembook.  If you state here the model number and more information on your system, we will be able to help you further with this.

That sounds great.  I am using a ChemBook Model 5033.

That is a 333MhZ system... what I would suggest is instead of going with a full-blown Debian distro to start with something a little less intensive.

Mepis Lite is what I would be using for that type of system.

I was going to recommend this same thing myself :)

http://ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/testing/

has three ISO versions,
MEPISLite-3.3.2.1.rc1.iso
MEPISLite-3.3.2.1.rc1_32.iso
MEPISLite-3.3.2.1.rc1._64iso
I assume that I should go with the first one listed there.

I have a logon screen!

I have gone from nothing to a very cool little display.  It never looked this good even when I was using windows 95.

Now to find a MEPISLite 3.3.2-1 (2.4.29) users guide.  It has come up with a graphic user interface complete witha username and password prompt.  But this is during the installation and I have not provided one.  I need to find some docs.
