knoppix 4.0 linux (http://www.linuxiso.com) installation on hard drive: perhaps this will help to someone with trouble installing live cd\'s to hd.

hardware:installation performed on a dell pentium 2 laptop, 4GB hard drive, 128 ram.
note: cfdisk command was not used for partitioning
1st: partition your hd into atleast 3 seperate section: one for root (/) (atleast 2000.00 mb), one for swap(note:swap space should be double the size of ram) , and one for usr or home (/usr or /home). partitioning done with a graphical partitioner: used mandriva 2006 cd.
2nd: boot cd and wait for desktop to appear.
3rd: press ctr+alt+f2 to switch to the command line.type in this command to run the install script: "sudo knoppix-installer"
4th: configure your installation, then proceed with the installation process.
5th: choose mbr for installation path for the boot menu.

Free Linux Book (knoppix)
« Reply #2 on: March 22, 2007, 08:49:03 PM »
As with everything we do from using a computer for the first time to driving a car, there is a learning curve.

So it is even with the Knoppix Distro.

Alas there is help out there:

The book Knowing Knoppix is a book (free!) that helps the ultimate beginner with how to use the distro.

About Knoppix:
Knoppix is an astoundingly clever product. It runs Linux completely from CD. There is no need to install. It bypasses all the software already installed on your PC or laptop. It automatically detects the hardware in your computer, such as video card, sound card, networking, the lot (subject to suitable hardware). When you\'ve finished using Knoppix, simply restart. Your computer will return to your regular system, and it will behave as if nothing has happened. Knoppix is Free Software and open source under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence (GPL).

Knowing Knoppix is a beginner-friendly book designed to help with these situations:
You can\'t start Windows! Disaster? Possibly not. It is often possible to rescue files from crashed Windows computers, even when Windows cannot be started. This guide takes you step by step through the process.
You are curious about Linux, and you want to discover what all the fuss is about.
You want a useful guide to help you get started.

This is not a "dummies" book. Instead, it is for smart people who want - or need - to run Knoppix for the very first time.
