Linux and the Penguin
« on: November 25, 2005, 10:40:36 PM »
Anyone know why the penguin is the "mascot" for the Linux community?

Was just curious.

Penguinitis!

I too have been curious about this. It appears that the original developer of Linux, Linus Torvalds, has claimed, in various posts to Linux kernel discussion groups over the years, to have been attacked by a "ferocious penguin that bit me and infected me with a little known disease called penguinitis. Thank goodness this was before the now-dreaded "bird flu"! Linus states that, "Penguinitis makes you stay awake at nights just thinking about penguins and feeling great love towards them."

Despite the funny claim, it is common consensus in the Linux community that Mr. Torvalds was not literally "bitten and infected" but rather was considering the future of Linux in the event it ever became a competitor in the marketplace and needed a goofy, fun, and distinguishable logo image for Linux.

Introducing "Tux" the Linux Penguin. http://www.isc.tamu.edu/~lewing/linux/ The artist Larry Ewing first drew Tux in 1996 using GIMP (The GNU Image Manipulation Program), an illustration program that comes pre-packaged with many GNU/Linux distributions. The penguin is open-source, so as per his web site, Ewing grants anyone the permission to use Tux for their Linux-associated activities but requests that GIMP be given credit.
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. -- Linux learns.
