After updating kernel in fedora core 3
« on: July 03, 2005, 07:37:36 AM »
This isn\'t a question, just a situation I had which others might run into with Nvidia after updated kernel in fedora core 3.

I ran up2date and among other things, got a new
kernel. I had the nvidia driver prior to this, with
the /etc/xorg.conf file changed as per nvidia\'s
instructions.

When booting in with the new kernel, X stopped working.
It gave that blue screen with the X configurator prompting
about various stuff and eventually getting me in with
no nvidia driver, but a generic one.

To fix, reboot and boot in with the old kernel (should
be two choices of kernel in the bootloader),
edit /etc/inittab so you\'ll boot to run level 3 next time
(command line only). Now reboot and login with the new
kernel. run the nvidia install program again as you
wold have done the first time, but with the flag:
--update
This will download and install a new driver for the
new kernel. After the install program is done,
go to /etc/inittab and change it back to run level 5 so
you\'ll boot into X again next time. You can use joe
or vi to edit the file.

Hope this may help someone one day...
