Test Server
« on: December 25, 2005, 12:59:10 AM »
I just installed Debian 3.1 on an old box I pulled out. I put apache/php/mysql on it, and uploaded my new website for developing/testing... wow, it is so great!
All you need for the perfect test box is Debian 3.1, phpmyadmin, and a website.
I will be posting my [HOW TO] guide shortly, after I have more time, however I wanted to say that for those who have old PC\'s: save them! If you write websites or web code, and want to be able to test your website/code in a place not in public view without messy .htaccess files, then install debian (or your other favorite linux distro), and go to work. It may seem like alot of work, but I did mine in about 2 hours.

And why Debian? apt-get!

True indeed. In fact for a stripped version of Linux (no GUI) running just a server, it can indeed be run on computers as slow as old 486 computers which goes WAY back.

The only thing that would bog down a server is the running of multiple threads (which if you are using for a TESTING server you will not have that problem) and with accessing databases (which if written correctly should not be a problem).

I used an old P-III 500MhZ for the longest time until it finally kicked the bucket after approximately six years of continuous running and at that time I upgraded my AMD XP 2000+ to a 64-bit processing unit and the AMD 2000+ is now running as a testing unit.

Just to show how CHEAP you can build a testing box if you don\'t already have one...

Pricewatch has a PIII system with DVD and CD-RW (overkill, just need CD-ROM), 128MB RAM (again believe it or not, overkill),  for $129 SHIPPED. That\'s more than I paid for dinner last night.

Of course like most of us, we have the parts available to us to put together a system just from the parts we have!

Yup, Debian 3.1 and 2 hours and you can have a fully working test box on your home network. Great for testing PHP MySQL scripts.
