Whats on your box?
« on: February 02, 2005, 10:41:33 PM »
The laptop has CentOS 3.3 and my main box has CentOS 3.3 dual booted with XP.
Looking to buy SUSE 9.2 Pro for both.

I was in the middle of a suse 9.2 FTP install and towards the end the electric went out :(  Im just going to buy the retail version at Best Buy this weekend.

I\'ll have to do some searching about the Ubuntu as this is the first time I ever heard of it. Is it based of off anything like redhat?

I picked up the Suse retail box, as well, and would recommend it!

Ubuntu is Debian based with a standard GNOME desktop.  It\'s making some big headlines over at DistroWatch  and across the web in recent months.

I run Mandrake 9 on the Dell laptop.  I really like the desktop features, but it doesnt recognize my Netgear PC Card wireless adapter :(  I wanted to upgrade to version 10 to see if that makes any difference, but upgrading fails.  Knoppix workes really well tho, but a little laggy and noisey to use often.  I get a brand new Gateway laptop next week, so I cant wait to try stuff on there.

My desktop runs DSL-Embeded for running linux on Windows.  It is great for testing scripts and learning since it doesnt require to boot down from the normal Windows session.

Our servers all run RedHat.  RPMs make for easy package installs and such :)

I fiddled around a bit with Xandros, but I think it needs some more work and I dont like how they are charging $$ for the nicer versions :(

Gentoo! It took me a long time to settle on a distro. I used Slack for about 2 years - switched to Gentoo finally (after many others in between) and it has paid off. My main system is GNU/Linux only; always has been, always will be. Been running GNU/Linux since 1998, why rock the boat? ;) The laptop is XplodingPile because I need a Windows machine for my development tools.

Hey Techie :) Welcome to LinuxBoards.
Debian must be doing something right... since what is TPG\'s uptime now, almost 200 days? :D

It forces me to learn command line commands, and to learn how the operating system works. Many a time I have been stuck on something that I have had to use google (and maybe even go out and buy a book) to fix, but its a great way to learn. Its especially nice because then when I go to work on my VPS, I know what I\'m doing (well, sortof :D).

A good battery backup just sits there until something like that happens and then you are oh so glad you spent the money. Turn off the monitor and let it finish its download. Most decent ones will give you about :30 before it kicks the bucket.

I love my APS UPS :). Only cost me $100 and powers both my PC\'s for 5 minutes at least.
Oh, and the edit of your post was to fix the quote bracket :D
