Why do people put up with it?
« on: December 11, 2008, 02:10:28 PM »
I was called today to go look at someone\'s computer that was \'running slow\' as it was described on the phone. when i got there I found a fairly new PC running Windoze XP.
\'Slow\' was not exactly what it was. Damn near stopped and choked to the top with malware, junk progammes, spyware- you name it. I tried to remove stuff, then reboot after reboot it still kept coming back.
Frankly the thing was in so much of a mess the only thing i could recommend was a total re-install of the OS. This machine is 18 months old. :(

This is going to mean a search for driver disks, and backing up files- which are probably infected anyway.

The scary thing is that people generally seem to accept this as normal. When you consider what most people actually use their PC for, there isn\'t anything that they do that couldn\'t be done better by running Linux.

I just shrug my shoulders and reflect on the fact that I am running machines here that were made in the late 1990\'s. They run fast and clean and do everything that is expected of them and more besides. Oh- and they run Linux!:D

18 months old!  Wow, what a shame.  Yeah, it is really amazing what people have been "programmed" to accept as "normal" within the Windoze world.  Simply stunning.

I note that Micro$oft\'s new advertising slogan is:

\'Windows: Life Without Walls\'.

That\'s exactly what the problem is with Windows. They are even telling you!! :D

Remember that 18 months is ANCIENT to Windoze computers... I literally purchase a new computer every 6-8 months just to keep up with all the crap that keeps coming out.

And absolutely you can EASILY run a Linux based machine on a 486-DX computer (that\'s from the 80s) and it will still run fine. However, just like with Windoze... you still need SOME more processing power to run efficiently and I can definately see even todays distros running on PC-166 computers (early 90s). Those kind of computers can be found for $50 or less and laptops for not much more than $100... and what do we lose? Not much.

I am wondering if M$W7 is any better.  I am assuming not?

There are a number of legitimate reasons people put up with it . Familiarity would probably be the number one reason, is my guess.
Aside from that you have, ease of use, an attractive GUI, and compatibility with third party software. However, all of the aforementioned problems has led me to look for a Linux alternative for stability yet retain some of the attractive characteristics I enjoy about windows.

After trying 15 or so distros, most of which I liked, but didn't have the familiarity to win over my kids, Eureka! Elive. Speed, stabilty,
ease of use and a terminal. Perfect for the Windows crossover newbie, yet not too bloated for the more experienced user.
