Windows Server thrashes Novell\'s Linux
« on: November 17, 2005, 08:15:06 AM »
I found this story yesterday and thought it was really interesting.

=============================================

Windows is more reliable than Novell\'s Linux and easier to manage, according to Microsoft-funded research carried out by Security Innovation.
The research simulated two IT departments, one running Suse Linux from Novell and one running Windows Server 2000. It found the Linux system required an eye-watering 187 patches while Windows needed just 37.
Ashim Pal, Microsoft\'s chief Linux basher, told the Reg: "Windows is more reliable over time and the time to provision (getting systems up and running) is 40 per cent less than Linux."
Researchers followed the imaginary IT departments over the course of a year as they moved from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003 and from Suse Enterprise Linux 8 to Suse Enterprise Linux 9.
In that period the Novell system suffered 14 "critical breakages" while the Windows system suffered none.
In effect, the Suse set-up was impossible to adminster - the actions taken to keep system running meant the terms and conditions of the contract with Novell were broken so any warranty would have been null and void.
Pal said Microsoft had learnt from the success of Linux in providing modular versions of its server software and its attitude to its community of partners.
Novell was not able to comment at press time but we\'ll update the story when they do.
More details on the research and its methodology should be available here soon: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/facts/default.mspx. ®

Linux is also open-source... there is a lot to be said for using something that is compiled by the masses for the masses. Thinking about it, it is almost unbelievable that Linux is even around because of open-source, but you see web sites like Wikipedia which are open-source that are totally thriving.

Open source is an intriguing model to me.  The more I study it the more I grow to respect it.  Many, many individuals and groups work selflessly to develop software for others to use and enjoy - gratis.  Try to find an atmosphere like that in ANY corporate model!

Additionally now, I see this in the news ticker ...
"New Study Suggest Linux Has Foundational Reliability Problems"
..."This isn\'t about \'can\' or \'can\'t,\'" Ryan Gavin, the director of platform strategy at Microsoft told me in a briefing yesterday. "There are a million different ways of doing things on Linux, but unfortunately half a million of those are wrong..."
See whole article here:

UNBELIEVABLE!  I believe the reason M$ is doing this is to attempt to fool the masses who may not know any better.  We ALL know those people who operate with teh theory of, "If it costs more, it MUST be better."  You know, they have the $$ but dont want to put real thinking or research into anything.  M$ also knows the open-source model that GNU-Linux follows and is attempting to exploit it; knowing that open source planning contains NO MODEL for negative attack ads against competing brands, therefore APPEARING to be defenceless against any of the shabby "research", "polls", "studies", etc.. being conducted by Microsoft themselves!

The real shame is that M$ can\'t forsee how this BS is ultimately going to backfire on them.
