Google proposes free Wi-Fi for San Francisco
« on: October 01, 2005, 10:48:34 AM »
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 30 (Reuters) - "Google has submitted a proposal to offer free, wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi) to the entire city of San Francisco," Google said in a statement.

This is intriguing. Usually Google follows the industry and does it sompler and better; i.e. search better than Yahoo but followed, Maps better than Mapqwest but followed, etc.. But this is a cutting edge deal. I think it is too aggressive a move for Google. They should let someone else try to do this first and then learn from their mistakes.

I believe there are going to be so many unknown factors that may spawn potential lawsuits and liability issues such as network misuse, hacking, and such. For example, my Ipaq automatically connects to wireless networks. I have heard of nasty phone and PDA virii that get passed over Wi-Fi networks.

Maybe I am just too skeptical? What do you think?
