How many servers for google?
« on: April 27, 2005, 07:22:22 PM »
Anybody have any idea on number of servers in the Cali DC that google runs off of? Not counting the other DC\'s. Just the one in Cali. I know they run their own OS but does anybody also know if it is based off of anything?

Google uses their own OS on SUN servers. How many servers... that would be an answer that would be hard to find out but one I would love to know.

Why not just ask them?

I doubt they are going to give away proprietary information.

Google\'s Server Architecture
« Reply #5 on: August 26, 2005, 03:43:10 PM »
In a recent article, Urs Hoelzle (Google\'s VP of Operations and Engineering) leeked information concerning his company\'s web server architecture.  Although he didnt say exactly how many servers are in their employ, he did state that it was many cheap servers (approximately $1,000 apiece) that operate on intercnnected nodes.  The OS they run is a stripped down Linux Kernel.

From what I have found out... Google uses over 10,000 servers. If someone has some more concrete numbers, I would love to hear them.
