Just thought I\'d throw a quick word out there for a distro I used for about 8 months or so - CRUX. It\'s a source distro, but only allows optimization above the base system. All software that gets installed is compiled after you install the base system as binaries from the install CD.
This is the fasted distro I have ever used in 7 years, period. It ran circles around my stage 2 Gentoo machine on the same hardware. The only thing I didn\'t like about the distro was the package management - it was pretty good, and used a BSD style ports system, which I love, but was kind of quirky. CRUX doesn\'t rank too high on the popularity scale, but is a shorter install than Gentoo if you are into source distros. If you have a scratch machine or drive, check it out. It is optimized for x686 only, so if you are thinking of running it on an old box - no workie.
