Hiding E-Mail with Javascript E-Mail
« on: October 20, 2005, 10:39:51 PM »
There are scavenenous e-mail sniffers out there that will steal your e-mail address from your web site because you simply have it listed on your web site.

This creates a ton of spam coming into your e-mail box and reduces your productivity.

A very simple workaround is using Javascript E-Mail workaround.

For me I use...

Remember these bots read the HTML code and that is what they are going to see. On the other hand your users would see
webmaster@zelo.com

Thought I\'d share that with everyone out there in Linux land.

Interesting. My concern though is that bots can easily support JavaScript and you\'ll be in the same boat. (Well, relatively easily :P) That\'s why you never rely totally on client-side security. Leaving it up to the client is leaving too much to chance.

I just write my email as:

webmaster[at]gamingultimate[dot]net

People can usually figure it out, and if they cant, oh well.

#1 Very user unfriendly
#2 It looks like crap

There are several ways to write an e-mail so that it is hidden from the web. You can use PHP or ASP if you want to do it server-side... you can make it so that there is a contact forum... something other than THAT.  VERY unprofessional.

I have GameSurge kiddies running all over my site :(, most of them I probably don\'t want to email me :D
I am toying with a Contact Form though, I\'ll see how that goes.

I am interested to know if your TrustGauge score (http://www.trustgauge.com) would actually go down if you did not have a contact form or a clickable e-mail address. I personally would not give up ranking for e-mail from kiddies and viagra ads (which are filtered by my rules in Outlook anyway).

Zelo, I like the idea of this method of hiding email addresses from spambots. I am confident that most spambots do not support javascript due to the shear volume of queries they are making and javascript would need to be programmed in and using resources of the host machine.

Other popular ways are:
- Inserting a NOSPAM message like user@domain_NOSPAM_.com (remove \'_NOSPAM_\'
- Using a graphic image of the address.
- Using an @ symbol alternative like [at]
- Another method I saw from here http://www.neilgunton.com/spambot_trap/ is to use HTML character entities for example the @ symbol is actually @ ;

Or you could use a contact form. If users want to contact me, they fill out the form (looks just like an email) and submit it. It gets emailed to me, where I read what they said, and reply.

Sure, but you need to be careful with \'common\' contact form methods like sendmail or frontpage generated ones as they can be easily scoured or exploited :(

Whether using a contact form (that is properly coded) or using the method that I use or using other methods, anything is better than anyone [at] anywere.com and it not be clickable.

Remember the #1 rule about internet users is they/we are lazy.

Problem #2323452345 with using javascript is what about users that have JS turned off? Client-side security is a no-no.

#1. Over 99% of users have Javascript turned on.
#2. You can post the anyone [at] anywhere.com for those who don\'t have it
#3. I would hardly consider this a security risk.

With that said we have all learned there are numerous ways to get around the problem and it is up to the web designer(s) to decide which is best for their particular application.

As CSS, XHTML, DTHML, and other technologies are incorporated into the web, most with Javascript attached to them somehow, I can\'t see how it is really even possible to properly surf the web anymore with JS turned off.

That topic (maybe a poll?) should be in another thread though.
