Web Editor for Linux?
« on: January 06, 2008, 10:51:56 PM »
Finally after years of frustration with trying to find an editor for Linux and having only one option -- NVU, there is another out there that is very good and there is a free version (not a trial).

ActiveState has developed a program called KOMODO. It comes in two flavors -- the free version and the full feature version.

The free version is called Komodo Edit: Award-winning editing for dynamic languages including Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and Tcl; plus support for browser-side code including JavaScript, CSS, HTML and XML.

Background syntax checking and syntax coloring catch errors immediately, while autocomplete and calltips guide you as you write. Available on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

KomodoIDE is the commercial version ($295US): ActiveState\'s Komodo IDE 4.2 helps developers create great applications using dynamic languages and open technologies.

Award-winning tools for debugging, code intelligence, visual code navigation and the regular expression toolkit help developers write cleaner code faster, while source code control integration, a project manager and multi-user support assist in team development.

With improved performance for all supported languages (including Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby & Tcl, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and XML), simple Firefox-style extensibility, and flexible multi-platform licensing for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, Komodo IDE has developed smart tools with developer freedom and choice in mind.

Although I have yet to use the commercial version (another post will come when I get that far) I am quite impressed with the free version. No, it will not replace development tools like Dreamweaver or Coldfusion but it is a step in the right direction

Try it out... it\'s free!

They dont have this in my Synaptic Package Manager (Debian, Mepis) unfortunately, so I tried downloading the package and installing, but with no luck.  I believe if Komodo wants to get serious about Linux, they should add to repoistories and RPMs and such.

I also noticed that Komodo is distributed by ActiveState and hosted on Windows server.  Boo!!!
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. -- Linux learns.
