Drive Warning: /hda3 (/var) is 90% full
« on: December 13, 2005, 08:52:00 AM »
I have been getting this message in my email every day for the last few days. It was at 85% a while ago, but now that it is at 90% it concerns me a bit more. The message is originating from one of my Cpanel servers. I will be investigating this today to see what the matter is. Has anyone else received messages like this; or perhaps have any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

[Solved] Found mail script was exploited to send spam
« Reply #1 on: December 16, 2005, 09:34:25 AM »
Since various things live in the linux /var partition, such as the mail queue and databases, I decided to start the investigation in the mail queue. After probing around a bit in the queue, I noticed over 300 emails waiting for delivery and many of them were the same size (sure sign of spamming). Checked the FROM: lines in the mail headers of the suspected messages and they all were being sent from the server itself. Someone was cc\'ing a bunch of aol addresses. Found mail script that had been exploited and took care of it. Now thw /var part is back to normal.

I hope this helps someone else. Lucky I found this BEFORE getting the server blacklisted :)
